Catalysis refers to the change in the reaction rate of a chemical process in the presence of a substance named a catalyst. In the chemical reaction, a catalyst remains the same, unlike other reagents which are consumed. A catalyst can function in a variety of chemical reactions, either speeding or slowing the chemical process. The former, or the one which increases the reaction rate, is called positive catalyst, and the latter, is known as negative catalyst, or inhibitor. Promoter is a substance which increases the catalytic activity, while a catalytic poison deactivates a catalyst.
Catalysts can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous, which depends on whether a catalyst exists in the same phase as the substrate. Biocatalysts are often regarded as a separate group.
