An electrocatalyst participates in an electrochemical reaction. The specific catalyst functions at electrode surfaces or may act as the electrode surface itself. The electrocatalyst, either homogeneous or heterogeneous, assists in transferring electrons between the electrode and reactants, and facilitates an intermediate chemical transformation as in an overall half-reaction.
A variety of fuel cell electrocatalyst is used in electrochemistry, specifically in fuel cell engineering, to increase the reaction rate. The platinum based electrocatalyst has the property of increasing the rate of oxygen reduction to water, either to hydroxide or hydrogen peroxide.
