Heterogeneous Catalyst

Heterogeneous catalysis is a form of catalysis where the catalyst and heterogeneous reactant are in different phases. In most cases, a heterogeneous catalyst is a solid, while reactants are gases or liquids. The total surface area of the solid has an important effect on the reaction rate. The catalyst particle size is negatively correlated to the surface area. Heterogeneous catalysis is significant in the chemical and energy industries.

There are a number of mechanisms for reactions on surface. In the Haber process, for example, the finely divided iron acts as a catalyst for the synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen. Hence, the strong triple bond in nitrogen is weakened and the hydrogen and nitrogen atoms combine faster. Thus, the reaction rate is increased.

Homogeneous catalysis is an opposite process of heterogeneous catalysis, in which the catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants. In the heterogeneous catalysis, products are readily separated from the heterogeneous catalyst, which is often more stable and degrades much slower than a homogeneous catalyst. The heterogeneous catalyst, however, has its disadvantages, in terms of puzzling reaction mechanisms.

The heterogeneous catalyst is typically supported by a second material that acts either to improve the effectiveness or minimize the cost. The support often interacts with the heterogeneous catalyst to affect the catalytic reaction.
