A catalyst serves to change the rate of a chemical reaction. Unlike other substances that participate in the chemical process, the catalyst is not consumed by the reaction. It can either speed or slow the reaction, with the former called positive catalyst, and the latter, negative catalyst.
The composition, chemical property and mass of a catalyst remain constant in a chemical reaction. The catalyst is highly selective of its reaction system, with the same high specificity as that of a key to a lock. A catalyst can cause catalysis in one chemical reaction, but may not necessarily in another. For example, manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst in the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate by increasing the chemical reaction rate. However, it may not be the case in other reactions. Also, for some reactions, there may be more than one substance serving as the catalyst, as you can know from the fact that magnesia, ferric oxide, and copper oxide, etc. can all play a catalytic role in the thermal decomposition of potassium chlorate. Put simply, there is no one-to-one correspondence between a catalyst and a chemical reaction.
Application
A catalyst has played a significant role in chemical production, scientific experiments, cycles of life activity, and many others. Enzymes, e,g., as protein catalysts generated by plants, animals and microorganisms, are typically used in almost all chemical reactions in organisms, brewing and pharmaceutical industries, etc.
We at Chempack provide a complete line of catalysts, such as reforming catalyst, isomerization catalyst, hydrogenation catalyst, hydrotreating catalyst, sulfur recovery catalyst, methanation catalyst, ammonia synthesis catalyst, shift catalyst, and more.
